ILF Advocacy Director Speaks at Michigan Law School’s ‘Human Rights Week’
ILF advocacy director Jennifer Smith recently addressed students at Michigan Law School to kick off Michigan Law’s annual “Human Rights Week,” which focused on detention issues within the US and abroad. Ms. Smith focused on the global crisis of excessive pretrial detention, which can be alleviated through the adequate implementation of the right to counsel for poor persons accused of crimes. She also provided several topical anecdotes, based on the ILF’s experiences in Afghanistan and Nepal, to illustrate the severity of the problem. The event was well received as a practical introduce for law students to some of the challenges the ILF faces in trying to protect the rights of accused persons around the world.
