Open Positions with the ILF

Internships: New York City

The ILF is currently seeking law students and exceptional undergraduate students for unpaid internships in our New York office. Exact start and end dates are flexible. Interns will have the opportunity to engage in all aspects of the ILF’s work in developing effective criminal legal aid systems in post-conflict and transitional settings. Intern tasks may include researching law in countries emerging from conflict or in transition; writing memos on relevant legal issues; helping implement and improve data collection methods in our country offices; and other tasks as assigned.

ILF Spring 2017 Legal Internship

International Strategic Litigation Fellowships: Afghanistan

The International Legal Foundation is seeking two experienced criminal defense lawyers with expertise in impact and strategic litigation to train lawyers in its Strategic Litigation Unit in ILF-Afghanistan’s Kabul office for one month in fall/winter 2017.

Qualifications: 5+ years of experience providing criminal defense legal aid; experience drafting appeals and/or as a law clerk; experience in pre-trial and impact litigation. Note that there are no language requirements for this position.

ILF-Afghanistan Strategic Litigation Fellowship 2017

International Fellowships: West Bank and Tunisia

The ILF seeks experienced lawyers to help build a proactive approach to criminal defense in the West Bank and Tunisia by training and mentoring local public defenders. Lawyers will volunteer in the ILF’s public defender office for three to four months, and are paid a stipend to cover their living expenses.

Currently, the ILF is seeking West Bank and Tunisia fellows on a rolling basis; placements are available immediately and throughout 2017. Fellows receive stipends to cover their living expenses while abroad, and all travel expenses are paid by the ILF.

Advocacy Director: New York City

In the ILF’s work to expand its global advocacy for this essential component of a fair and effective justice system, the ILF seeks a dynamic and skilled Advocacy Director. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Advocacy Director will lead the ILF’s efforts to build strategic relationships with governments, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations, global philanthropy and other key partners to increase awareness, action, and resources devoted to the right to counsel for the indigent accused. This is a new position and provides an exciting opportunity to work to meaningfully address the global crisis in access to legal aid for the indigent accused, and influence legal aid policy worldwide.
